The name

またたび matatabi means silvervine.

またたび matatabi is silvervine, a vine many cats adore, often even the ones who shrug at catnip. A very old Japanese cat pleasure.

Every word we use, explained
Why it exists

Some cats shrug at catnip. A lot of those same cats lose their composure entirely for silvervine.

This is a plain pressed ball of it. No plastic, no housing, nothing to charge. Your cat licks it, rubs its face on it, and bats it skidding across the floor. The scent is pressed inside, so it keeps for a good while.

Roll it out on its own, or set it near the Nadenade groomer as a second reason to visit the corner. It is a small thing. Your cat will not treat it like one.

Questions

The things people ask

Still unsure? Ask us directly and a person will answer.

What is matatabi?

またたび matatabi is silvervine, a plant many cats respond to, often even the ones who ignore catnip. It has been a Japanese cat favourite for centuries.

Is it the same ball as the one in the Nadenade groomer?

Same idea, a pressed silvervine ball. We have not yet confirmed it seats perfectly in the groomer cradle, so for now we call it a companion rather than an exact refill. Happy on the floor either way.

How do cats use it?

They lick it, rub their faces on it, and knock it around the room. The scent is pressed in, so it lasts.

Is it safe?

It is natural plant material, meant as a toy to lick and bat. As with any cat toy, keep an eye on your cat and take it away once it wears down small.
